The Scholarship Holders of the Mozart Gesellschaft
Zhassulan Abdykalykov, trumpet
The trumpet player, Zhassulan Abdykalykov, was born in 1992 in Kasachstan and began to play the trumpet at the age of seven. At first he was given tuition at the Kasachische Nationale Akademie fuer Musik with Petr Zhiszhila, later at the Staatliches Moskauer Konservatorium P.I. Tschaikovsky where at the age of ten he began his studies with Prof. Novikov. Since 2014 he has been studying with Prof. Mathias Hoefs at the Hamburg Musikhochschule.
The very talented trumpeter has won several prizes at national and international competitions, e.g. the first prize in 2016 at the International Competition of the Staatliches Moskauer Konservatorium P.I. Tschaikovsky as well as at the Elise-Meyer Competition Hamburg and in 2013 the Grand Prix at the International Festival Shabyt in Astana/Kasachstan. In 2014 he became a scholarship holder of the Otto-Stoeterau-Stiftung. One year later he was chosen to be a scholarship holder of the Oscar und Vera Ritter-Stiftung.
Zhassulan Abdykalykov has already played in orchestras from a young age, e.g. at the Russischen Deutschen Festival conducted by Valery Gergiev, the Penderecki Musik Akademie Westfalen and the NDR Jugendsymphonie Orchester. However he has also helped out in professional orchestras: for instance he has played first trumpet with the Hamburg Philharmonic in the Staatsoper Hamburg, in the Staatliche Akademischen Symphony Orchester Ewgeni Swetlanov, in the Russischen Nationalorchester, with Musik Aeterna under Teodor Currentzis and in the Opernorchester Astana in Kasachstan. He has worked with famous conductors such as Wladimir Jurowski, Mikhail Pletnjov, Valery Gergiev, Krzysztof Penderecki and Thomas Hengelbrock.
